Khichdi is a simple home food prepared with rice and lentils which is soft and soothing to the tummies of the babies.It is a complete meal full of nutrition, protein and folic acid not only for babies and toddlers but also for kids and adults. Khichdi is the best nutritious food for babies and much comforting food to offer when a child or adult is sick.
Moong dal is rich in Vitamin A,B,C,E and folic acid which helps to produce and maintain new cells. It can do wonders for your baby’s skin , hair , nail and growth.Rice is a good source of magnesium and calcium – both essential for healthy bones.It is known to be a low allergen food, it is an ideal first solid food to be fed to babies. Introduce rice and dal separately to your babies once they get adjusted to offer moong dal khichdi.
Let’s check the recipe.
- Rice – 2 tsp
- Moong dal – 1 tsp
- Turmeric powder – a pinch
- Salt – as needed
- Water – ¾ cup
- Ghee-½ tsp
Method
- Combine the rice and moong dal in a bowl.

- Wash the rice and moong dal with clean water and drain the excess water using a strainer and discard it.
- Soak the rice and moong dal for at least 20 minutes.

- Add the required amount of water , turmeric powder and salt in a small pressure cooker with rice and moong dal. Mix well.

- Close the lid and pressure cook for 3 whistles in low flame.
- Let the pressure cooker cool down slightly before opening the lid

- Mash the Khichdi using potato masher very well when feeding to your 7 month old baby.

- If you think you need to thin down the consistency then add 1 tsp of breast milk or 1 tsp warm water.
- Serve lukewarm khichdi to your babies.

Note
- Sterilize the bowls and spoons used for feeding your baby in a vessel with hot water for five minutes and keep it immersed in the same vessel until use.
- Before serving the khichdi ensure you have introduced rice and dal separately to your baby.
- Make sure rice and dal are soaked well.
- Try to feed small amounts when you start and later you can increase the quantity.
- When introducing khichdi to your baby try it to serve during day time.
